Audiologists have the opportunity to improve both the profession of audiology and quality of care provided to patients by participating in the Medicare Physician Quality Reporting Initiative (PQRI) program. The Audiology Quality Consortium (AQC) is a coalition of ten audiology organizations that have developed a Web site to provide information about three new audiology measures that audiologists can report on for 2010 and be eligible for a 2% incentive payment.
Audiologists can also report on a fourth measure:
- Otitis Media with Effusion (OME): Diagnostic Evaluation–Assessment of Tympanic Membrane Mobility.
The measure applies to patients aged 2 months through 12 years with a diagnosis of OME who receive an assessment of tympanic membrane mobility with pneumatic otoscopy or tympanometry. Audiologists are encouraged to report on this measure; however, as it does not apply to Medicare beneficiaries, the 2% incentive payment is not applicable. Detailed information about this measure is available on the AQC Web site and on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Web site (select "2010 PQRI Measure Specifications Manual for Claims and Registry Reporting of Individual Measures and Release Notes" and look at measure #94).
