Region 7 Newsletter

Dear NSSLHA Chapter Presidents and Advisors!

Welcome into 2008! My name is Laura Gingrich and I am the NSSLHA Regional Councilor for Region 7 (representing the states of Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin) and the national NSSLHA President. As the semester begins to roll, please consider the following events and place them on your calendars. The following are many opportunities for NSSLHA to help your chapter and recognize your outstanding work!

January 31st – NSSLHA Honors Nominations for NSSLHA Chapter and Advisor Honors are due!

Annually, the Executive Council of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) awards Honors to outstanding students, faculty, chapters, and individuals that have made significant contributions to both the Association on a national and local level and to the discipline of human communication sciences and disorders.

Would you like to nominate an individual or chapter for NSSLHA's Honors Program? It's simple!

  1. Complete the NSSLHA Honors application online!
  2. Submit your materials to the national office by the deadline. Nominations for Chapter Advisor Honors and Chapter Honors are due by January 31. We also accept nominations for Member Honors until May 1.

Description of each Honor

Chapter Advisor Honors
The Advisor of the Year Honors is given to one NSSLHA chapter advisor who has provided sustained and exceptional leadership to the association through their efforts with a local NSSLHA chapter. NSSLHA chapters are invited to nominate an advisor for this award. After reviewing the nominations, the NSSLHA Committee on Honors presents the name of one nominee for consideration and the Executive Council votes on that nomination.

Chapter Honors
The Chapter of the Year Honors are awarded to a NSSLHA Chapter that demonstrates an awareness of student issues and concerns, outreach to the community, educational opportunities, and social and fund-raising activities promoting both the professions and national NSSLHA.

Member Honors
Local NSSLHA chapters may nominate one audiology and one speech-language pathology major to receive Member Honors. Member Honors are awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement, service to the academic unit, professional conduct, and service to NSSLHA. Any college or university junior, senior, or graduate student who is a member of both national and the local chapter is eligible for consideration.

If you have any questions, please contact me at laura_gingrich@yahoo.com.

Thank you for all of your work supporting students and the professions, NSSLHA hopes to recognize you, your advisor and your chapter!

February 11th – Applications for NSSLHA Regional Councilor Due!

Any student that wants a chance to impact the future of the professions and get the career opportunity of a student-lifetime should consider a position on the Executive Council. Here are some of the benefits of participation:

  • Regional Councilors are directly involved with policies affecting students in CSD programs. Regional Councilors gain valuable leadership experience and skills early in your academic/professional career.
  • Regional Councilors get an inside track to network with national-level leaders in ASHA.
  • Regional Councilors make a difference in the quality of life for students in CSD programs.
  • Regional Councilors receive transportation, hotel, and meals to attend meetings during the ASHA Convention and to the national office in Rockville, Maryland in the spring.
  • Being a Regional Councilor is a fun and rewarding experience for students interested in enhancing their knowledge and involvement on a national level in the profession.
  • Regional Councilors are required to attend two meetings a year. The first meeting is during the ASHA Convention and NSSLHA will cover your travel expenses and the second is during the spring semester and is held in Washington D.C.

You should consider applying if you are:

  • A current member of the national association. Membership on the local level does not qualify.
  • Majoring in human communication sciences and disorders or a related disorder.
  • Eligible for NSSLHA membership during the two-year term of office. (You may apply even if you will enter a CFY by the end of your term).
  • Able to serve as a NSSLHA regional councilor for the entire two-year term of office.
  • If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at laura_gingrich@yahoo.com. This has been a tremendous experience but every term does come to an end. I encourage you to apply!

March 1st – NSSLHA Grant Applications Due!
