ASHA Glossary: Dose Equivalent

The product of the absorbed dose in tissue, quality factor, and all other necessary modifying factors at the location of interest. This dose accounts for exposure to other forms of ionizing radiation not having to do with fluoroscopy. The units are Sievert and Rem. Dose equivalent limit (annual) is the annual dose equivalent limit defined by the degree to which radiation exposure should be controlled to achieve an acceptable level of risk for workers and the general public, taking into account both somatic and genetic effects of ionizing radiation exposure.
