Foundational Principles

2013 Public Policy Agenda

The 2013 Public Policy Agenda is based on the common understanding that underlies each issue objective by focusing on the foundational principles to provide a common thread throughout the agenda.

Ethics—Preservation of the highest standards of integrity and ethical principles is vital to the responsible discharge of obligations by speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and speech, language, and hearing scientists. The ASHA Code of Ethics sets forth the fundamental principles and rules considered essential to this purpose.

Commitment to client care and outcome—Ensuring clients receive high-quality services that assess, maintain, and improve quality of life is the cornerstone of the work that highly trained speech-language pathologists and audiologists engage in every day.

Evidence-based practice—Continued basic and applied research in speech, language, and hearing science is essential for the long-term viability of the professions and demonstrates the effectiveness and importance of the services provided by ASHA members.

Diversity—Consistent with ASHA’s vision, mission, and role as a leader in the area of human rights, the Association supports laws that will protect and address the increasing diversity of ALL of ASHA’s membership, as well as the clients we all serve.

Non-discrimination—ASHA supports laws and policies that promote non-discrimination based on disability, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, race, religion, age, and cultural or ethnic heritage.

Commitment to ASHA members–Advocating for essential services by speech-language pathologists and/or audiologists and the benefits to clients and their families directs attention to job security and autonomy of the professions. ASHA seeks reasonable workloads, paperwork reduction, and improved coverage and payment for speech, language, and hearing care, which results in better outcomes for clients.

Collaboration with other organizations—Collaborative work with other organizations and membership groups strengthens our efforts to achieve our public policy agenda goals and helps ensure positive client outcomes.
