CAA Call for Applications
The Nominating Committee for the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) is soliciting applications to fill vacancies on the CAA for three (3) positions. These positions are for four-year terms beginning on January 1, 2014.
The CAA Nominating Committee is seeking to fill
Academic Positions (1 Vacancy in Audiology)
Applicants for academic positions must:
- hold a faculty/staff position in a CAA-accredited program
- have an earned graduate degree from a regionally accredited institution
- hold a rank of associate professor or above, or be a comparably experienced educator
Additionally, the nominating committee encourages individuals to apply who have one or more of the following characteristics:
- clinical teaching (supervision) as his or her primary role
- experience as an academic accreditation site visitor
- experience with distance learning environments
- currently holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology or the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology
- comfort with using technology (e.g., website, blog) to support work
Please note: Because no more than one individual from a specific educational institution may serve on the Council at any one time, individuals from the following institutions will not be eligible to serve in 2014: Duquesne University, Hunter College/CUNY Graduate Center, Long Island AuD Program (Adelphi, Hofstra and St. John's Universities), Montclair State University, Purdue University, University of Cincinnati, University of Colorado-Boulder, University of Northern Iowa, University of the Pacific, Vanderbilt University, and Washington State University.
Practitioner Position (1 Vacancy in Audiology, 1 Vacancy in Speech-Language Pathology)
Applicants for practitioner positions must:
- have the direct delivery of speech-language-hearing services as his/her primary employment function at the time of appointment
- have worked in the area that credentials are held for at least five (5) years
- be employed full-time in a non-academic setting
Note: An adjunct or complementary appointment to a graduate education program shall not disqualify practitioner members, provided they are employed full‑time in a non‑university setting. Employment in more than one position or agency may be combined to meet full-time requirement, i.e., at least 32 hours per week.
Additionally, the nominating committee encourages individuals to apply who have one or more of the following characteristics:
- experience in supervising students and/or clinical fellows
- experience as an academic accreditation site visitor
- experience with distance learning environments
- currently holds the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology or the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology
- comfort with using technology (e.g., website, blog) to support work
Please note: Because no more than one individual from a specific clinical facility may serve on the Council at any one time, individuals from the following facilities will not be eligible to serve in 2014: HealthSouth Corp. (Alabama), Heritage Healthcare, Inc. (South Carolina), Muscogee County (Georgia) School District, and Palm Springs (California) Unified School District.

General Requirements
Individuals interested in serving on the CAA should be familiar with the charge to the CAA to understand the responsibilities involved. Service on the Council will require commitment and time. During certain periods of the year, it is anticipated that Council members may average 4–6 hours per week for CAA activities. Members establish accreditation standards, conduct in-depth evaluations of accreditation and reaccreditation applications to determine compliance with established standards, accredit qualified graduate programs, and monitor compliance over the period of accreditation through review of annual reports. The CAA relies heavily on technology and its Collaborate site to conduct program reviews and other Council work.
The CAA holds two 3½-day meetings per year at the ASHA National Office, typically beginning the third Wednesday of February and third Wednesday of July, and a 1-day meeting in conjunction with the ASHA Convention. Attendance and participation at CAA's face-to-face meetings is expected.
Application and Elections Process
The CAA Nominating Committee, currently chaired by Dr. Dan Halling, will prepare a slate of candidates from the applications received, consisting of at least two individuals for each position. The slate and ballots for the academic positions will be sent to all CAA-accredited programs for election in late August/early September. The slate for the practitioner position will be forwarded to the ASHA Board of Directors for selection.
