The Buds Are Coming To San Diego

ASHA's musical campaign, aimed at protecting the hearing of the young, will feature native San Diego artist, share the stage at the USO holiday concert

(Rockville, MD - November 9, 2011)

San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders has declared November 14–18 "Buds In The Schools Week," a time when the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) will bring its Listen To Your Buds (www.listentoyourbuds.org) safe listening campaign to area schools. Following that, ASHA's campaign will share the stage at Balboa Theater for the twentieth annual USO San Diego holiday concert.

Hearing experts are concerned that misuse of popular personal audio technology could be causing noise-induced hearing loss. Using music to deliver important health messages, ASHA's Buds campaign encourages children to use the technology safely and protect their hearing.

Native San Diegan Sandra Velasquez will be one of the Buds campaign's performing artists during the week. Velasquez's popular children's group, Moona Luna, will perform morning concerts at several area schools. Other Buds In The Schools Week activities will include daily morning in-school announcements about hearing protection and how children can be proactive with regard to their hearing health. Related lesson plans have already been disseminated throughout area school systems.

ASHA's Buds campaign will cap off its time in San Diego by delivering its message to military families who attend the USO San Diego's 20th Annual Holiday Concert. That event will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 19, at the Balboa Theater.

Buds musicians Lucky Diaz and the Family Jam Band will perform with the Marine Band San Diego. Los Angeles CBS affiliate KCAL9 has hailed Diaz's group as one of the "Best Kids' Bands in LA."

Sponsors of the Buds Campaign are the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (www.noisyplanet.nidcd.nih.gov), at the National Institutes of Health, the Consumer Electronics Association (www.ce.org), Parents' Choice Foundation (www.parents-choice.org), Califone (www.califone.com), the Educational Audiology Association (www.edaud.org), Music Teachers National Association (www.mtna.org) the National Association For Music Education (www.menc.org) the National Hispanic Foundation for the Arts (www.hispanicarts.org), the Recording Industry Association of America (www.riaa.com) and Tune A Fish Records (www.tuneafishrecords.com).
