Responsibilities of Advisory Council Vice Chairs

Description of Office for Advisory Council Vice Chairs

The Vice Chairs for the Audiology Advisory Council and the Speech-Language Pathology Advisory Council are charged with assisting the Chair in fulfilling their responsibilities. The Vice Chair assumes the responsibilities of the Chair in the absence of the Chair, with the exception of service on the Board of Directors.

  • 1 year

  • Ability to listen, analyze, think strategically and creatively, and work well with people individually and in a group
  • Ability to consider multiple viewpoints about controversial issues and to communicate ASHA's perspective effectively with members and stakeholders
  • Willingness and ability to prepare for and attend annual meetings, and engage effectively and responsibly in discussions
  • Possess the ability and willingness to develop certain skills if one does not possess them, such as understanding financial statements, learning more about the substantive program areas of the Association and issues identified by members
  • Familiarity with the technology tools (e.g., web-based discussion forum, group email lists) to fulfill the responsibilities of the position
  • Honesty; sensitivity to and tolerance of differing views; a friendly, responsive, and patient approach; community-building skills' personal integrity; a developed sense of values; and concern for the Association's development
  • Ability to facilitate discussions face-to-face and through electronic means among a large body

Primary Responsibilities

In addition to the responsibilities outlined in the Advisory Council member position description, the vice chair will:

  • Be informed about the Association's mission, services, policies, and programs
  • Assist the chair in coordinating the annual meeting of the Advisory Council
  • Assist the chair in facilitating communications among the members of the Advisory Council throughout the term of office

Time Commitment

  • Approximately 10 hours per month

Association Support

The Association does not provide the Vice Chairs of the Advisory Councils with any administrative or financial support other than what is stipulated in the position description for all Advisory Council members.
